What do we know about patterned hair loss for Choloepus sloths in care?
Animals with this pattern of balding have very similar, if not identical, diagnoses on necropsy/histopath.
- Many animals with facial hair loss have been removed from their dam before natural separation occurs at 1 year old, with many of them being removed from dams at catastrophic ages between 0 and 6 months of age.
- These animals have received incorrect diets for extended periods of time. This includes being fed.
large amounts of rice, dog food and/or cat food, primate leaf-eater pellets, and meat products (like mice/pinkies). In addition to being feed the wrong foods, these animals have not had
proper food items; specifically, they are missing fresh, whole leaf browse.
note: S.O.S. does not provide medical advice please read and have your animal evaluated by a licensed professional.
